Early life and education

Sir Jeremy was educated at Bootham School, an independent school with a Quaker background and ethos in York, before taking a BA in history and economics at Hertford College, Oxford and an MSc in economics from the London School of Economics.[4]

Civil service career

Heywood worked in HM Treasury as private secretary to Chancellors Norman Lamont, at the age of 30,[5] followed by Kenneth Clarke and Gordon Brown before moving to be Prime Minister Tony Blair's Principal Private Secretary in 1999. In 2003 he left the civil service to work as managing director and co-head of the UK Investment Banking Division at Morgan Stanley.[6] At the request of Gordon Brown, by then prime minister, Heywood returned to government in 2007, becoming head of domestic policy and strategy at the Cabinet Office.[7] In January 2008, Heywood became the first Permanent Secretary at 10 Downing Street, a role he retained after David Cameron became prime minister in May 2010.

Cabinet Secretary

On 11 October 2011 it was announced that Sir Jeremy would replace Sir Gus O'Donnell as Cabinet Secretary in January 2012. It was also announced that the role of Head of the Home Civil Service would not be held by the same person as that of Cabinet Secretary, but instead would go to Sir Bob Kerslake, who shall hold the post in addition to his current role as Permanent Secretary at the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Honours

Already a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB), Heywood was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2012 New Year Honours.[8][9]

Personal life

Sir Jeremy is married to Suzanne Elizabeth Cook, and is said to be a keen windsurfer and golfer. He is known to keep a bust of Gandhi in his office.
